Stuart took BSc in biology at Royal Holloway College, an MSc in Biophysics and Physiology at UCL, and a PhD in Synaptic Physiology at University of Glasgow. He also spent some time in industry at the Wellcome Foundation and Shell Research. He went as a postdoc to Stephen Thesleff’s lab. in Sweden, and later returned to take up a Beit Fellowship with Bernard Katz and Ricardo Miledi in Biophysics at UCL. After 8 highly productive years in Biophysics he was awarded a Wellcome Trust Senior lectureship in Pharmacology at UCL, followed by the award of a Howard Hughes International Investigatorship, and later a personal Chair at UCL. He was awarded a named Chair (Gaddum Chair of Pharmacology) following election to the Royal Society in 2002. He serves on various Editorial Boards (currently Mol. Pharm.), and Grants Committees (Newton, Leverhulme Trust). He has been a pioneer in the application of patch-clamp recording techniques combined with molecular methods for investigating excitatory central synaptic transmission and in particular the pharmacology, diversity and molecular mechanisms underlying glutamate receptor channel function in health and disease in the brain.
